Lethbridge (Farming Smarter) – Farming Smarter, working with Yvonne Lawley from the University of Manitoba, is experimenting with cover crops for southern Alberta. In side by side blocks, technicians plant one block with a cover crop and leave the other without.

They will use various crops as cover on various typical Alberta commercial crops. Here are the project objectives:
Objective 1: Quantify the potential for cover crop growth across a range of cover crop windows and growing environments in Prairie Canada.

Objective 2: Evaluate the reliability of cover crop establishment within annual crop rotations across a range growing environments in Prairie Canada

Objective 3: Evaluate the impact of cover crops in crop rotations on crop yield and quality across a range of growing environments in Prairie Canada

Objective 4: Evaluate the impact of cover crops on soil quality across a range of growing environments in Prairie Canada
