The average steer carcass rate has increased from 857 lbs in 2010/2011 to 982 lbs in 2017.
For seven years Cody Lafrentz has had a routine every day that included taking care of steers so that he could take them to shows including the Calgary Stampede. And while his future no doubt has livestock and cattle in it, this past Junior Steer Classic was the last time he will show a steer at the event. He made the most it taking home the title of Grand Champion of the show.
It's 4-H on Parade, a chance for kids from Calgary area clubs to show off their projects which include everything from livestock to photography to welding to baking.
In the Fall of 2017, the community of Balzac lost a dedicated community member in Garth Bishop. In the wake of the tragedy, Stanley Jones and the Balzac Beef club decided to raise this year's 4-H on Parade charity steer and will be donating the money raised from the steer's sale to his young family. Bishop was an alumnist of the Balzac Beef Club. The steer will be auctioned off around 12 p.m. on Sunday, June 3, 2018.
