Calgary (Rural Roots Canada) – The Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) will host a dedicated discussion on livestock traceability to give cattle producers more time to share their views before the organization’s annual general meeting.

The Producer Town Hall on Traceability will take place on Monday, March 2, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Cavalier Calgary Hotel, with both in-person and virtual attendance options available.

ABP says the session is intended to provide a respectful and open forum for producers to express a range of perspectives on traceability.

In January, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced that publication of proposed amendments to livestock traceability regulations was being put on hold until industry concerns are better understood.

The move came after a flurry of concerns raised by producers.

In the statement, the agency acknowledged ongoing public discussion around proposed changes to Part XV (Traceability) of the Health of Animals Regulations. The CFIA confirmed it would pause any further publication of the amendments while consultations continue with producers, industry associations, provincial governments, and other stakeholders.

It also clarified that these amendments are not currently in place and have not been finalized.

At the upcoming town hall, representatives from the Government of Alberta and the Office of the Chief Provincial Veterinarian are expected to attend. Officials from the Canadian Cattle Association, the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency, and Livestock Identification Services will also be present to listen and take part in the discussion.

ABP says its goal is to ensure producers’ voices are heard as the conversation around traceability continues to evolve.
