Winnipeg, MB (Rural Roots Canada) – A University of Saskatchewan researcher whose work has helped shape beef production practices across Western Canada has received one of the industry’s top research honours.
Dr. Bart Lardner is the recipient of the 2026 Canadian Beef Industry Award for Outstanding Research and Innovation, presented by the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) on behalf of Canada’s beef industry.
Lardner is a professor at the USask’s College of Agriculture and Bioresources and the Ministry of Agriculture Strategic Research Program Chair in Cow-Calf and Forage Systems.
For more than two decades, his applied research has focused on cow-calf management, forage production, animal nutrition and ways producers can reduce costs while maintaining productivity and profitability.
Dr. Lardner’s research has helped producers reduce costs while maintaining performance and profitability,” said Dean Manning, chair of the BCRC and a beef producer near Falmouth, Nova Scotia. “Committing to ensure beef producers see value from research investment while supporting the next generation is greatly respected and appreciated.”
Lardner’s work has influenced practices ranging from winter grazing and bale feeding to water quality management and heifer development.
His work extends beyond research. Lardner has supervised more than 25 graduate students and numerous undergraduates and has delivered more than 400 invited presentations across Western Canada and the northern United States.

Saskatchewan beef producer Charlotte Ward said Lardner’s research has had a direct impact on producers.
“As a cow-calf producer myself, I have seen the positive impact of his research on improving the profitability and sustainability of my operation,” said Ward.
The Canadian Beef Industry Award for Outstanding Research and Innovation was established in 2015. It recognizes researchers who demonstrate strong industry-focused research, collaboration, leadership and a commitment to mentoring the next generation of professionals.
