(Rural Roots Canada) – Recent storms across Western Canada resulted in reports of mostly light to medium damage. There were a few reports of heavy damage due to hail in Alberta and Saskatchewan, according to the Canadian Crop Hail Association (CCHA).

The CCHA is currently investigating 416 crop damage claims from storms that occurred July 6-12.

Saskatchewan Municipal Hail Insurance’s Rodney Schoettler says the current claims are on crops in a vegetative leaf state. However, the danger increases in future hailstorms as crops reach a higher level of maturity.

“The claims we get going forward will be [on crops that are] starting to head and pod and the payable losses will start to increase from this point on,” says Schoettler.
