Lethbridge, AB (Rural Roots Canada) – Lethbridge Polytechnic has developed a new program to help close the growing workforce gap in Canada’s veterinary sector.

The Pre-Veterinary Medicine Diploma is a foundational sciences program that the school says will prepare students for advanced professional studies in veterinary medicine. The two-year program will cover specialized courses in animal genetics, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, and nutrition. It will also include hands-on lab experience.

“We are preparing students who are passionate about science and animal health for success in professional programs and high-demand careers in the field,” says Dr. Kevin Smith, dean of the Centre for Business, Arts and Sciences.

After students meet the course requirements, they have the option to continue onto the Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences post-diploma degree. Other options include taking the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) or entering the workforce directly.

“Our new Pre-Veterinary Medicine program reflects Lethbridge Polytechnic’s commitment to building pathways for students,” says Dr. Smith.

One future option for graduates is to move into the role of a livestock technician. This is a role that is currently in demand within the agricultural industry. According the 2025 Veterinary Market Assessment done by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA) and the Alberta Veterinary Technologist Association (ABTVA), there is a lack of services for large animals such as farm animals. There are many rural practices that struggle to find veterinarians who work on mixed to large animals. Once a veterinarian is hired, practices often struggle to retain them due to long emergency hours and coverage of large areas.

The report also states that it is estimated that over half of veterinary technologists will be leaving their positions by 2035. Mainly due to factors such as retirement. This is expected to create an increase in demand for veterinary professionals, one that current Alberta graduates are not on track to fill. This means that half of the position vacancies will need to be filled by graduates from other parts of Canada or outside of Canada.

The registration for the new pre-vet program is currently open. More information is available at lethpolytech.ca/pre-vet.
