Alberta (Rural Roots Canada) – How easy is it to find local food in Alberta?

That’s the main thrust of a survey being conducted by the government of Alberta, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.

The Alberta Local Food Demand Study aims to understand how and where Albertans are buying local products, whether it’s at farmers’ markets, a neighbourhood grocer, or a national retail grocery chain. It also wants to determine consumer preferences, from buying fresh produce and meat to dining at restaurants that feature locally sourced ingredients.

Findings from the study will help Alberta farmers and food processors better meet Albertans’ demands for locally grown food.

The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and is open to residents aged 18 and older. Participants who complete the survey will be entered into a prize draw for one of four $500 gift cards to an approved Alberta farmers’ market of their choice.

The province encourages anyone interested in supporting local food to share their perspective.

Responses will remain confidential and will contribute to a broader effort to grow Alberta’s local food economy.
