Calgary (Rural Roots Canada) – “In agriculture, it’s not just about working the land—it’s about breaking barriers and supporting one another,” says Sarah Foster.
Foster, whose career in agriculture has spanned five-decades and multiple countries, is the type of person who you want to pull up a chair beside and listen to for hours as she shares personal trailblazing stories one after another.
Thankfully that is exactly what the President of 20/20 SeedLabs will be doing at the Advancing Women in Agriculture Conference, which kicks off on Sunday and runs through Tuesday at the Hyatt in downtown Calgary.
Foster’s presentation, titled “Between Us Girls,” will offer a candid look at the ongoing challenges women face in agriculture—challenges that persist despite the many strides made toward gender equality in the field.
Foster’s talk aims to shine a light on the complexities of being a woman in a historically male-dominated industry. “While things are definitely getting easier for women in agriculture, there are still stumbling blocks—obstacles that we must acknowledge and work to overcome,” Foster says. Her session will focus on her personal experiences navigating those challenges, offering practical advice on how women can build resilience, seek out mentorship, and support each other in their careers.
“I’ve been doing this for 47 years, and I’ve seen so much change,” Foster explained. “But the truth is, there’s still a lot more work to do. The struggles may look different now, but they’re still there.” Foster plans to delve into her journey, discussing the highs and lows she has faced as a woman in leadership, as well as the valuable lessons she has learned along the way.
As a woman at the helm of a company, Foster knows the weight of leadership in a field where men have traditionally dominated the top positions. “It’s lonely at the top, especially as a woman,” she says. “But what makes it worth it is knowing that we’re paving the way for the next generation of women in agriculture.”
Her talk will explore not only the challenges but also the strategies that have helped her succeed—insights into resilience, confidence-building, and the power of a supportive community. “We can’t do it alone,” Foster said. “It’s about coming together, learning from one another, and using our collective strength to push through the tough times.”
Foster encourages anyone who hasn’t yet attended to seize the opportunity to participate. “I’ve heard nothing but positive feedback from past attendees. It’s an event that leaves you feeling energized and ready to take on the world.”
