Ottawa, Ont. (Rural Roots Canada)Statistics Canada says collection for the 2026 Census of Agriculture and the 2026 Census of Population is now underway.

Farm businesses and households across the country will begin receiving census invitation letters by mail, containing instructions to complete questionnaires online.

The Census of Agriculture collects information about every agricultural operation in Canada, while the Census of Population collects demographic, social and economic information from every household. Together, they paint a portrait of Canada’s ag sector and total population. The combined data is used to guide decision-making by governments, businesses, and organizations.

Chief Statistician André Loranger says the census is an important tool for understanding changes in Canadian society.

“Results from the 2026 Census of Population will allow us to accurately reflect Canadian society,” says Loranger, in a release. “This data will provide invaluable insights to all levels of government, as well as Canadian businesses and non-government organizations.”

The Census of Agriculture, he adds, is just as vital, ensuring Canadians have the necessary data to support farmers.

“The Census of Agriculture enables Statistics Canada to provide a comprehensive and integrated profile of the physical, economic, social and environmental aspects of Canada’s agriculture sector,” he explains. “Responses will ensure that all Canadians have the data they need to support farmers and plan a strong future for all of Canada.”

Census questions are available in alternate formats and in 28 languages. If households do not complete the questionnaire, StatsCan will follow up to assist with completion.

Under the Statistics Act, a census must be conducted every five years, and participation is mandatory for all farm operators and households. The agency says all responses are kept strictly confidential.
