One ranch in Alberta has a long history with the second Saturday of February.

The Soderglen Ranch Select Bull Sale, will once again be held on that day, which coincidently falls on the same day as Valentine’s Day this year.

Seed-Stock – Cow Herd Manager Jared Sherman says the ranch has a rich history dating back to the mid to late 1970’s when it started out raising Charolais pure-bred cattle.

“That was Stan Grad, the founder and owner of Soderglen Ranches today.  Started there and then graduated into Simmental cattle as well from there Scott Lee has entered the company.  We needed to find a way to evolve into a sustainable seed stock or pure bred company and that was to cater to the commercial cow-calf industry,” said Sherman.

Sherman says that during that time their annual sale has changed tremendously from the times when it was held off-farm.

“We have our own Bull sale here, we have for about 15 to 17 years now and the number of bulls have dramatically increased so have the quality of the bulls and just the way that we seed pure-bred cattle and commercial cattle in our industry the traits that we strive to achieve and the way we engineer these cattle genetically engineer them.”

Sherman say technology has also changed how they sell their bulls… you no longer have to be ring-side.

“Now you can sit at home and buy your bulls we have a lot of people who buy sight on scene, they look at the catalogue, we try to put as much data as we can in the catalogue to them and they can register online before or on the day of the sale.  They don’t even have to leave their couch or their office and they can watch the sale live on-line, bid on-line, and never have to set foot on the ranch.”

250 bulls will be available for sale on sale day, with another 150 available afterwards.
