Heavy September Rain Eases Prairie Drought
byRRC soundbites

Significant rain in September reduced the extent of drought across the prairies, and only 9% of agricultural land is now considered abnormally dry or in drought.

The latest Canadian Drought Monitor saying parts of southern Saskatchewan received 400% of normal rainfall in September, southern Manitoba 350%, and in Alberta, some areas received 200% of normal rainfall.

And while all that rain may have reduced the drought region to a relatively small portion of west-central Alberta. It did, of course, cause concerning delays to the harvest and now that we’ve dried out from early week rain and snow, the race against frost continues.

In British Columbia’s Peace Region and the Northeast, September finished dry with temperatures 6 to 8 degrees above normal in the latter half of the month.
