Calgary. Alta (Rural Roots Canada) — Applications are now open for the 2027 Nuffield Canada Scholarship, offering professionals in agriculture the chance to study global food systems through international travel and research.
The program is open to individuals between the ages of 25 and 50 working in agriculture, food or agribusiness. Selected scholars take part in a two-year program that includes at least 10 weeks of travel, along with independent research on a topic relevant to their work.
Jenna Starich, a recent participant, says her study focuses on livestock sustainability using a systems approach. That means looking at environmental, social and economic factors all together.
She says her topic started broad, but over time, she realized the importance of understanding how different parts of agriculture are connected.
“I really like understanding how everything works together and not just one aspect of the system in great detail,” she said.
Starich says she initially kept waiting for a clear turning point in her research, but eventually realized she was more interested in the bigger picture.
“The more I tried to do that, the more I realized I want to look at the entire system,” she said.
Starich spent about 25 weeks travelling during her scholarship, visiting farms, meeting producers and learning from industry leaders around the world. She says the experience helped her see agriculture beyond a local or national level.
Along the way, she also built connections that continue to shape her work.
“Having someone that you can call on in any corner of the world is such a unique network to be a part of,” she said.
She says those connections often felt immediate, even when meeting someone for the first time.
“When you meet them, the first time you see them, it’s like an old friend, even though it’s the first time you’ve ever met somebody,” she said.

Nuffield Canada says the program is designed to help participants gain a better understanding of global agricultural challenges and opportunities, and bring that knowledge back to their communities.
Starich says participants need to be prepared for a fast-paced and unpredictable experience.
“You need to have a plan, but you need to leave room for spontaneity,” she said.
She says being open-minded is key to getting the most out of the opportunity.
“I think you need to be prepared to be open to experiences, even if you don’t think that it’s something that might suit you,” she said.
At the end of the program, scholars complete a report and are expected to share what they have learned about global agriculture, as it pertains to their study topic.
Starich says the experience can benefit people at different stages of their careers, whether they are just getting started or have years of experience.
“I think really it can be for anyone as long as you’re willing to learn, meet new people and put yourself in uncomfortable situations,” she said.
She says there is no perfect time to apply.
“If you’re thinking about doing it, I would say completely do it,” she said.
The deadline to apply for the 2027 program is June 30. More information is available on the Nuffield Canada website.
