Vermilion (Rural Roots Canada) – Vermilion’s Chatsworth Farm is preparing to welcome visitors for Alberta Open Farm Days on August 16, offering a full lineup of tours, demonstrations, and family-friendly activities.

Alberta Open Farm Days, now in its twelfth year, is a chance for producers, agri-food operators and many others province-wide to open their doors and welcome the public in to show what they do day-in and day-out.

Charlotte Wasylik from Chatsworth Farm is one of the many farmers who are excited to take part in this weekend’s festivities once again.

“It’s just to give Albertans and anyone travelling to Alberta an opportunity to get a look inside farming and agriculture operations to see what goes on behind that farm gate or those barn doors,” says Wasylik.

Chatsworth Farm has been part of the program since 2020 and has steadily expanded its offerings.

“Every year we keep adding new things, keeping people engaged and interested while still keeping what our main Open Farm Days started with, which were those guided farm tours.”

“For other visitors, they’ve never touched a horse before. They’ve never been five feet away from a bull. So giving them that chance is really special.”

This year’s program includes favourites like cooking demonstrations, along with new attractions such as a butchery demo, sheep shearing, equine displays, and equipment from the local fire department. Community groups, including the SPCA and the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance, will also be on hand to highlight this year’s theme of water.

The event is also a boost for local entrepreneurs.

“Giving them a platform to be able to reach a huge audience is really special for them and really important to just keep their business viable,” said Wasylik.

With a mix of returning and new vendors, Wasylik promises a day that appeals to all ages.

“There’s going to be something for absolutely everyone, and it’s free. You can’t get better than that.”

Their event will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday on the farm near Vermilion.
