Falher, AB — The Farm-Her Artisan Market is set to return for its second year, bringing a vibrant showcase of local and regional vendors to the SARDA Agricultural Trade Show.

The market was created to provide an inclusive space for women to explore a wide variety of products and services ranging from farming tools and gardening supplies to health and wellness items. This year it will feature over 50 home-based and commercial vendors from across the Peace Country and the province.

“Our committee thought it would be a great idea to organize an event for the women of our region during the SARDA Trade Show,” said Alexandra Brochu, from the group the Northern Rural Chicks, which puts on the market every year. “We wanted to bring together vendors—whether local or from elsewhere in Alberta—who could offer products and services that resonate with the diverse roles women play in agriculture and rural life.”

It hasn’t taken long for this market to really gain traction in the community. Last year, Brochu and the committee reached out to SARDA manager Vance Yaremko, who in turn secured support from SARDA’s board of directors and staff, paving the way for the market’s debut in 2024. Following the success of that inaugural event, organizers are excited to build on that momentum this year.

Behind the scenes, the Farm-Her Artisan Market is a labour of love. Organizers dedicate hundreds of volunteer hours to contacting vendors, answering inquiries, and promoting the event across the region. From designing posters and engaging with media to physically putting up promotional materials in surrounding communities, the team’s commitment is evident.

“This market was also organized because, in our communities in Northern Alberta, more and more women are actively involved in the agricultural sector and on the farms,” Brochu explained. “They operate machinery, make key decisions, raise children, garden, and cook. We wanted to create something that validates their importance in agriculture and provides them with the tools and information they need to thrive.”

In addition to supporting women in agriculture, the event is poised to benefit all women in the area by offering access to a diverse range of products and fostering a sense of community.

Rural Roots Canada will be in attendance at the Farm-Her Artisan Market and SARDA Agriculture Trade Show.
