Montmartre, SK (Rural Roots Canada) – Digital technology, community, and craft beer have come together to brew a unique collaboration.

Bayer Crop Science has named Irvin and Braden Eberle of Montmartre, Saskatchewan, as the winners of its FieldBrew contest, granting them the opportunity to craft a one-of-a-kind craft beer, FieldBrew, a play on its FieldView digital agriculture platform. In partnership with Origin Brewing & Malting Co. of Strathmore, Alberta, it’s the first-of-its-kind initiative connecting farm to glass.

“It’s been a great opportunity,” says Braden. “It’s great to be involved with Origin and see how the product comes from the field directly into a beer can.”

The Eberle family farm, I W Eberle Farms Ltd., will feature prominently on FieldBrew’s label as part of the prize. The Eberles, who operate a fourth-generation grain farm growing durum wheat, canola, and lentils, have been active users of the FieldView platform for the past four years.

Jamie Mills, Bayer Crop Science’s digital campaign account manager, says the contest was a fun way to encourage engagement on the platform while celebrating agriculture’s community-driven nature.

“It was about the community that agriculture is,” says Mills. “Being able to share a beer with your family and neighbours after a hard day’s work is something everyone on a farm can relate to. So, for me, that was the real fun part of this whole process, bringing the community together.”

So, what style of beer has the Eberle’s settled on?

“I’ve really come to hazy IPAs over the last few years, so I’m thinking we’ll lean that way, but we’ll see what the day brings,” says Braden. “I’m very excited about trying some different beers here and coming up with something that we’ll enjoy.”

“I also like the IPAs, but I also really like red beers. We’ll have to decide between the two of us, and see which one wins,” says Irvin.

Braden is working with the Origin team in Strathmore, acting as a “Brewmaster” to create the beer. Once that’s done, FieldBrew will be available for purchase through Origin’s e-commerce platform, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting a local charity of choice.
