Alberta (Rural Roots Canada)Western Crop Innovations (WCI) is seeking farmer input to shape future research efforts and priorities.

As a result, the not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing crop development in Canada has launched a survey that allows producers to identify key areas they should focus on.

The survey, open until September 27, can be found here.

WCI has a 400-acre core site in Lacombe with additional testing locations in Olds, Morrin and Trochu.

It collaborates with partners across the country and internationally to develop new crop varieties that would be well-suited for the western prairies.

Currently, research is focused on improving traits such as disease resistance, drought tolerance, early maturity, and standability.

Western Crop Innovations, established in April 2024, is also working to develop varieties with value-added qualities like nitrogen use efficiency and non-GN malting lines, ensuring crops meet farmers’ needs.

The survey can be found here.
