Winnipeg (Rural Roots Canada) – A newly launched initiative aimed at advancing Canada’s position as a leader in cereal grain innovation has been given a considerable funding boost from four Canadian grain grower organizations.
The Global Agriculture Technology Exchange (Gate) Capital Campaign, led by Cereals Canada, has secured $13.4 million from Alberta Grains, Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission (Sask Wheat), Manitoba Crop Alliance, and Grain Farmers of Ontario. That brings its total funding commitment to just over $18 million, with a project fundraising goal of $102 million.
The GATE initiative is a visionary project looking to establish a cutting-edge facility in Winnipeg that will serve as a hub for agricultural innovation providing farmers with the tools, resources, and technical support they need to be competitive globally and remain leaders in agricultural exports.
In a statement, JoAnne Buth, Capital Campaign Chair for Cereals Canada, expressed her gratitude for the funding boost and emphasized the important role that farmers play in the ongoing success of Canada’s cereals industry.
“High-quality Canadian wheat starts with the growers, so it is fitting that this capital campaign starts with their commitment,” said Buth. “Growers are the foundation of agriculture, and this exemplifies their interest and devotion to a stronger, profitable cereals industry. We’re thrilled to see such strong support from the farm associations.”

Greg Sears, farmer and Alberta Grains Region 6 Director, said the organization’s ongoing commitment to advancing ag-tech and innovation aligns perfectly with the Gate initiative and expects there will be tangible results for farmers.
“Producers need to understand this is a multi-generational investment ensuring Canada’s profile as producers of high-quality, sustainably produced wheat and barley remains intact for our customers,” he said. “That sets all of us up as producers for many years to come.”
“We recognize the critical role that market access and development play in maintaining our competitive edge on the global stage,” added Sears. “The Gate initiative will not only reinforce our existing markets but also open new avenues for growth and innovation, ensuring that Alberta’s wheat and barley producers remain at the forefront of global trade.”
Alberta Grains Executive Director, Mike Flynn, added that the Gate initiative “represents an exciting leap forward for the grain sector by fostering collaboration and innovation…and economic growth, ensuring sustainability for our farmers.”
The Gate Capital Campaign, along with Cereals Canada, says it will continue to engage with potential donors, industry partners, and all levels of government to make the Gate vision a reality.
