Lethbridge (Rural Roots Canada) – Students studying agriculture at the post-secondary level are stepping into a world of opportunities, supported by strong industry partnerships and a growing demand for people to work in the industry that feeds the world.

Byrne Cook, Chair of the School of Agriculture at Lethbridge Polytechnic, says there are many career options available to students as they transition into the workforce.

“There are so many opportunities across Western Canada,” said Cook. “Students come to college, and many would like to work in Lethbridge, but some take jobs elsewhere and later move back as positions open up or their careers develop. The key is for students to get involved early, especially through summer positions,” says Cook.

This fall, the campus welcomed 13 companies for lunch-and-learn sessions, giving students direct access to industry leaders. These sessions allow students to explore roles within various organizations and evaluate which paths align with their skills and interests.

“It’s a great opportunity for students to get to know the industry, whether they like doing a particular job or not,” Cook explained. “They get the chance to explore. Then, they come back to school for two semesters, and they either shift to something else or continue into our degree program. The sustainability is certainly there.”

Many graduates have found long-term success, building stable careers that reflect the strength of the industry connections fostered at Lethbridge Polytechnic. “We’ve got alumni who have been in their roles for what feels like forever, and they’re doing well,” Cook noted.

Opportunities within the agrifood and related industries continue to grow. This month, Lethbridge Polytechnic hosted an ag career networking night featuring 20 companies eager to connect with students. “It’s a strange situation because most students already have jobs lined up,” Cook said. “But it shows the strength of the opportunities available. While not endless, there’s certainly no shortage of places where our students can get employed.”

As students engage with employers and refine their career goals, Lethbridge Polytechnic remains a hub for connecting education with opportunity. By fostering these connections, the institution ensures that students are prepared to succeed in a potential workforce.
