Prairie Weather (Rural Roots Canada) – Heavy rain, strong winds, and large hail have damaged crops throughout the Prairies.

From June 21 to 28, more than 1,250 crop damage claims were made, according to the Canadian Crop Hail Association (CCHA). The majority of those claims were from Saskatchewan, where some areas were pounded by golf ball-sized hail.

“We expect to see some payable losses,” says Darryl Tiefenbach, with Co-op Hail Insurance.

Damage ranged from light to heavy. Many crops are still in the early stages of growth, which gives some opportunity for recovery, according to Scott McQueen with Palliser Insurance.

“Cereal crops are generally resilient at this stage. With favourable growing conditions in the weeks ahead, many affected fields are expected to recover.”
