Regina (Rural Roots Canada) – A new crisis line aimed at supporting the mental health of Canadian farmers has been launched.
The National Farmer Wellness Network (NFWN) Crisis Line, operated by the Canadian Centre for Agricultural Wellbeing (CCAW), offers free, confidential, and farm-specific mental health support through 1-866-FARMS01 (1-866-327-6701).
Farming isn’t just a job—it’s a way of life, and it comes with its fair share of challenges, from financial stress and social isolation to unpredictable weather. That’s why this new helpline is here—to provide immediate support that truly understands the realities of farm life. Backing the initiative, Farm Credit Canada (FCC) has committed $1.5 million over the next three years to make sure help is always within reach.
Mental health struggles have long been a concern in Canada’s farming communities, where stressors such as extreme weather, fluctuating market prices, and isolation take a toll.
Dr. Briana Hagen, CEO and Lead Scientist at CCAW, says the crisis line will help close the gap.
“Farmers face immense pressures, and mental health challenges can go unaddressed due to stigma and lack of resources, says Hagen, who adds the National Farmer Wellness Network Crisis Line ensures they have access to expert support that understands the unique realities of farming life.”
The service connects farmers, farm families, and agricultural workers with licensed mental health professionals trained through the Canadian Agricultural Literacy Program (CALP).

Discussing mental health remains a barrier for many people and the agriculture community is no exception to that, which is why the helpline pledges to provide a trusted, judgment-free space for those in need.
Deborah Vanberkel, NFWN’s Chief Programming Officer, says this initiative goes above and beyond.
“This is more than a helpline; it’s a commitment to the wellbeing of Canadian farmers. We want them to know they are not alone and that help is available whenever they need it.”
Justine Hendricks, FCC’s President and CEO, explained why supporting this initiative was a priority.
“Farmers work tirelessly to feed the nation, often facing challenges alone. This crisis line ensures that they have access to mental health resources that understand the demands of farm life. FCC is proud to support this essential service,” says Hendricks.
