Lethbridge (Rural Roots Canada) – Farmers across the province dedicate extra time to serve on commissions and marketing boards, helping shape the future of their industry.

Jeff Frost, a director for Alberta Canola and a farmer near Olds, emphasizes that these boards are always looking for individuals to step up as directors or delegates. While the work is demanding, he believes that the more effort you invest, the greater the rewards.

“Everyone’s busy, and no one’s looking for another job, but you can choose how much time to give. The more you contribute, the more you gain from it. As a farmer, it’s a responsibility to give back and help lead. The time commitment isn’t too bad once you get started. During busy seasons, they leave you alone, and the winter or conference seasons are more intense, but it’s still worthwhile. You build valuable connections within the industry, get early insights into government plans, and stay ahead of what’s coming down the pipeline. I really appreciate that part.”

Frost also points out that even if farmers aren’t interested in serving on a board, it’s still crucial for them to voice their opinions on the initiatives and issues the boards are tackling.

“When a farmer says, ‘I don’t want to be on the board,’ it’s still vital for them to engage with the commission and share their thoughts on how their money is being spent or the direction the board should take,” Frost explains.

He stresses that something as simple as an email or a phone call can help guide decisions and keep things on track.

“That’s key. We work for the farmers, managing their money, and we want to hear all feedback—good, bad, or ugly. If you like what we’re doing, let us know with a call, a meeting, or an email. If you don’t, it’s even more important to speak up. The more people that voice their opinions, the better we can make changes and get it right. I know everyone’s busy and can’t attend everything, but if you can take a moment to call or share your thoughts, it helps us steer the ship in the right direction.”
